Consisting of letters, scrapbooks, photographs, and family history data and charts concerning the McFadden, White, and Macaulay families as well as the allied Banks, Cherry, Culp (Kolb), Faucette, Jordan, McAliley, McKinney, McLauchlin, Mebane, Oberchain (Openshine), Rives, Stephenson, Walker, Waters, Westbrook, and Woods families. Twelve scrapbooks, ca. 1890s-1957, document interests of Bessie McFadden (Mrs. John G.) White, esp. history, gardening, and poetry; historical clippings focus on history of Chester, Edgefield, Fairfield, and Sumter Counties; other volumes include compilations of material re South Caroliniana Library; historical homes of upcountry S.C., including essays, 1940s-1950s, by Elizabeth Reed; and vol., 1932-1943, re Edwin Green's column, "University Notes"; 4 vols. (1938-1943) include Julia Lester Dillon's column "Garden planning ... for South Carolina." Other materials document the affiliation of Bessie McFadden White (Mrs. John G.) with the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Also including "War Experiences of John C. McFadden," 1908; "Roster of 'Catawba Guards' [S.C. Volunteers, Regt. 6, Co. B]," with information concerning its members, 1861-1864; copy of pages from re establishment of the Palmetto Literary Club, Chester, S.C., with minutes, 1898-1899, concerning formation of a public library; and "Subscription for the Erection of a Monument to the Confederate dead of Chester County," 19 Jan. 1905, with names of financial contributors. Includes 49 photographs, chiefly family portraits, and a late 19th-century photograph picturing a South Carolina contingent on a visit to Mt. Vernon; images document work of various photographers from around S.C., including 4 studios from Chester, 3 from Columbia, 2 from Rock Hill, and one each from York and Charleston, S.C. Volumes include 12 scrapbooks, believed to have been compiled by Bessie McFadden White, documenting an interest in poetry, gardening [4 vols., 1938-1943, of Julia Lester Dillon's columns, "Garden Planning and Planting for South Carolina"], South Carolina and Southern history, upstate South Carolina homes [clippings of columns, 1940s-1950s, by Elizabeth Reed], and such national and regional figures as Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas A. Edison, Joel R. Poinsett, Strom Thurmond, and Francis W. Pickens.
